Time of Reflection
“He is short-sighted who looks only on the path he treads and the wall on which he leans.”
~ Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931), Lebanese-American writer, poet, visual artist and philosopher
“The secret formula of the saints: When I am in the cellar of affliction, I look for the Lord’s choicest wines.”
~ Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661), a Scottish Presbyterian pastor, theologian and author
“Lament isn’t the opposite of praise. Lament is a path to praise…”
~ Julius Kim, contemporary author, pastor, professor, and current president of The Gospel Coalition
“Lament is the transition between pain and promise. It is the path from heartbreak to hope.”
~ Mark Vroegop, contemporary author and pastor
“Meditation is the activity of calling to mind, and thinking over, and dwelling on, and applying to oneself, the various things that one knows about the works and ways and purposes and promises of God. It is an activity of holy thought, consciously performed in the presence of God, under the eye of God, by the help of God, as a means of communion with God.”
~ J.I. Packer (1929-present), a British-born Canadian Christian theologian and professor
“A story is precisely the sort of thing that cannot be understood till you have heard the whole of it.”
~ C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), British writer and lay theologian
“There are basically two ways to read the Bible — as a book of law, or as a book of promise. Our natural religious psychology wants to read the Bible as law… Every page [in the Bible], most deeply understood, shines forth as a promise of grace to sinners in Christ.”
~ Ray Ortlund, contemporary author and pastor
“God is a covenant-making, covenant-remembering, covenant-keeping God!”
~ Sinclair Ferguson (1948-present), Scottish author, pastor and professor

Micah 5:2-4 (ESV)
LEADER: But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
PEOPLE: From you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
LEADER: Therefore, he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel.
PEOPLE: And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.
ALL: And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.

HALLELUJAH, WHAT A SAVIOR!
(Philip P. Bliss, 1875)
“Man of Sorrows,” what a name
For the Son of God who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim!
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood;
Sealed my pardon with His blood;
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Guilty, vile and helpless, we;
Spotless Lamb of God was He;
“Full atonement!” can it be?
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Lifted up was He to die,
“It is finished” was his cry;
Now in heav’n exalted high,
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
When He comes, our glorious King,
All the ransomed home to bring,
Then anew this song we’ll sing:
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

RESPONSIVE READING:
Romans 8:31-39 (NASB)
LEADER: What then shall we say to these things?
PEOPLE: If God is for us, who is against us?
LEADER: He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
PEOPLE: Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
LEADER: Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
PEOPLE: Just as it is written, “For your sake we are being put to death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
LEADER: But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
ALL: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
ALL I HAVE IS CHRIST
(Jordan Kauflin)
I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way.
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave.
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will.
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still.
But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross.
And I beheld God’s love displayed
You suffered in my place.
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace.
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ.
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.
Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me.
Oh Father, use my ransomed life
In any way You choose.
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You.
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ.
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.

Special Benevolence Offering for Minneapolis Rebuild Relief
Our regular Benevolence Offerings are special collections above and beyond our regular giving to the church. The money received is then used in a variety of ways – 1) to help those with material needs within our church, 2) to help those with need in the broader Upper Valley Community, and 3) at times to help those suffering loss in other parts of the world. Today we have another such opportunity to give. Of the money collected 50% will be distributed to agencies assisting with rebuilding and relief efforts in Minneapolis, in partnership with fellow Converge churches in the city. The remaining 50% will go to meet other local needs through CRC’s Benevolence Fund. If you want to designate a gift for this special offering, please write “Benevolence: Minneapolis” in the memo section of your check or on your giving envelope. You can also give online here.

Psalm 105:1-15, 42-45 (ESV)
1 Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
3 Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
5 Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
6 O offspring of Abraham, his servant,
children of Jacob, his chosen ones!
7 He is the Lord our God;
his judgments are in all the earth.
8 He remembers his covenant forever,
the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
9 the covenant that he made with Abraham,
his sworn promise to Isaac,
10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
as your portion for an inheritance.”
12 When they were few in number,
of little account, and sojourners in it,
13 wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people,
14 he allowed no one to oppress them;
he rebuked kings on their account,
15 saying, “Touch not my anointed ones,
do my prophets no harm!”
42 For he remembered his holy promise,
and Abraham, his servant.
43 So he brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with singing.
44 And he gave them the lands of the nations,
and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,
45 that they might keep his statutes
and observe his laws.
Praise the Lord!
Confession of Faith
Adapted from The Belgic Confession (1561), Article 16
LEADER: What do you believe about your Savior Jesus Christ?
PEOPLE: We believe that we have no access to God but through our Mediator and Advocate Jesus Christ who became man, having united in one person the divine and human natures. Who else is there in heaven or on earth that loves us more than Jesus Christ? Though he was in the form of God, he made himself of no reputation, and took the form of a man and of a servant for us, and was made like us in all things. Where could we go to find a God that loves us as much as this—a God who laid down his life for us, even when we were his enemies? Who is there that has so much power and majesty, indeed all power in heaven and on earth, and yet cares for us so much?

Song
(sing as a group and/or sing along to recorded versions)
YOU ARE MY KING (AMAZING LOVE)
(Billy Foote)
I’m forgiven, because You were forsaken.
I’m accepted, You were condemned.
I’m alive and well, Your Spirit is within me,
Because You died, and rose again.
CHORUS:
Amazing love, How can it be
That You my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true,
It’s my joy to honor You,
In all I do, I honor You.
You are my King.
You are my King.
Jesus, You are my King.
Jesus, You are my King.

Benediction
(The leader or individual should read this aloud relishing in the confident assertion that Christ has conquered.)
Luke 12:29-32
LEADER: Do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
PEOPLE: Amen!
