Time of Reflection Quotations
“There is not one of the godly who does not daily experience in himself the same thing. According to the judgment of the flesh, he thinks he is cast off and forsaken by God, while yet he apprehends by faith the grace of God, which is hidden from the eye of sense and reason.”
~ John Calvin (1509-1564), French theologian, pastor and writer
“Sickness may befall, but the Lord will give grace; poverty may happen to us, but grace will surely be afforded; death must come but grace will light a candle at the darkest hour. Reader, how blessed it is as years roll round, and the leaves begin again to fall, to enjoy such an unfading promise as this, ‘The Lord will give grace.’”
~ Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), English pastor and writer
“‘Aslan is a lion – the Lion, the great Lion.’ ‘Ooh’ said Susan. ‘I’d thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion’… ‘Safe?’ said Mr. Beaver … ‘Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.’”
~ C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), British writer, academic and Christian apologist, an excerpt from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
“The reason we are able to forget our union with Christ is that we have yet to experience the full glory of what it will mean. For now, we are members of Christ’s body, but we still wander, our bodies still ache, and we shall still die.”
~ Michael Reeves, contemporary author and professor of theology, and Tim Chester, contemporary pastor and author
“Remember that you are not saved by increased levels of holiness, however desirable it is that you should reach them. …It is Christ who saves us-through faith. Your faith is a poor and crumbling thing, as is your spiritual service. Jesus Christ alone is qualified and able to save you because of what He has done.”
~ Sinclair B. Ferguson (1948-present), Scottish author, theologian and professor
Sermon Passage
Psalm 3 (ESV)
A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.
1 O Lord, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
2 many are saying of my soul,
“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah
3 But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head.
4 I cried aloud to the Lord,
and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah
5 I lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
6 I will not be afraid of many thousands of people
who have set themselves against me all around.
7 Arise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
8 Salvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people! Selah
