Time of Reflection Quotations
“When I was young I was sure of everything; in a few years, having been mistaken a thousand times, I was not half so sure of most things as I was before; at present, I am hardly sure of anything but what God has revealed to me.”
~ John Wesley (1703-1791), English Anglican cleric, theologian and author
“God’s Word does not merely impart information; it actually creates life. It’s not only descriptive; it’s effective too, God speaking is God acting.”
~ Michael Horton (1964-present), Professor of Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary California
“The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think. No book in the world equals the Bible for that.”
~ Harper Lee (1926-2016), American novelist
“I don’t think it is enough appreciated how much an outdoor book the Bible is…It is best read and understood outdoors, and the farther outdoors the better. Or that has been my experience of it. Passages that within walls seem improbable or incredible, outdoors seem merely natural. This is because outdoors we are confronted everywhere with wonders; we see that the miraculous is not extraordinary but the common mode of existence.”
~ Wendell Berry (1934-present), American novelist, poet, cultural critic, and farmer
“Revelation is the activity of God by which He unveils or discloses or makes known what is, to humanity, otherwise unknowable…It is a divinely initiated disclosure, not an effort or endeavor or achievement on the part of mankind.”
~ Sam Storms (1951-present), American pastor, theologian and author
“Words are only painted fire; a look is the fire itself.”
~ Mark Twain (1835-1910), American author
“Christ is the key which unlocks the golden doors into the temple of Divine truth.”
~ A.W. Pink (1886-1952), English pastor, author and teacher
Sermon Passage
Psalm 119:6-16, 25-32, 169-176 (ESV)
9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare
all the rulesof your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight
as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.
25 My soul clings to the dust;
give me life according to your word!
26 When I told of my ways, you answered me;
teach me your statutes!
27 Make me understand the way of your precepts,
and I will meditate on your wondrous works.
28 My soul melts away for sorrow;
strengthen me according to your word!
29 Put false ways far from me
and graciously teach me your law!
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
I set your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
let me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
when you enlarge my heart!
169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word!
170 Let my plea come before you;
deliver me according to your word.
171 My lips will pour forth praise,
for you teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your word,
for all your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, O Lord,
and your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live and praise you,
and let your rules help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your
servant, for I do not forget your commandments.
